Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to the Safe Schools Initiative as part of activities marking the International Day to Protect Education from Attack. The programme, which remains a key national priority, is designed to guarantee that schools across the country are safe havens for both students and teachers.
Speaking at the event, government officials emphasized that the initiative is central to protecting children’s right to education, particularly in conflict-prone areas. They stressed that schools must remain secure spaces where learning can thrive, free from the threat of violence or disruption.
The Safe Schools programme, first launched in Nigeria in response to attacks on educational institutions, focuses on strengthening infrastructure, enhancing security measures, and building community resilience. It also seeks to support teachers by providing an environment where they can deliver quality education in peace.
Stakeholders at the commemoration called for stronger collaboration between government agencies, security institutions, and local communities to sustain the programme. They noted that safeguarding education is critical not only for individual development but also for the nation’s long-term peace and prosperity.
