Nigeria has successfully retained its seat on the governing council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), reinforcing its influence in shaping global aviation policies.
At the 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montréal, Canada, Nigeria’s representative, Engr. Mahmoud Ben-Tukur, secured 163 votes out of 185 eligible member states, defeating 11 other African contenders to reclaim the prestigious position.
The re-election places Nigeria on Part II of the ICAO Council, a category reserved for countries that make the largest contributions to the provision of facilities for international civil air navigation.
Aviation analysts see this as a significant diplomatic win for Nigeria, ensuring that the nation continues to play a central role in international aviation decision-making, particularly in areas such as safety regulation, air navigation standards, and environmental sustainability.
With this victory, Nigeria maintains a strong voice in advancing Africa’s interests in global aviation, while also consolidating its status as a regional leader in the sector.
