Nigeria Seeks Global Edge With OECD Seed Certification

Share

Nigeria is moving to strengthen its seed industry as the OECD reviews its seed certification system, a step toward full membership in the OECD Seed Schemes.

Currently an observer, Nigeria hopes to join as a full member, a status that would allow local companies to export certified seeds under international standards.

The Ministry of Agriculture said certified, affordable seeds are vital for closing yield gaps and improving food security. The National Agricultural Seeds Council (NASC) is upgrading laboratories, training inspectors, and deploying digital tools to curb counterfeit seeds.

Officials say OECD membership could boost exports, attract investment, and enhance farmers’ access to quality seeds. However, challenges remain, including scaling inspection capacity and ensuring smallholder farmers can afford certified seeds.
