Nigeria has emerged as the leading African exporter of crude oil to the United States, shipping 33.23 million barrels between January and August 2025. The exports, valued at approximately $2.57 billion, accounted for more than half of all African crude oil supplied to the U.S. during the period.
The United States Mission in Nigeria highlighted that this performance reflects the deepening energy trade relationship between the two countries, which is expected to support economic growth and job creation on both sides of the Atlantic.
The development comes amid shifts in global oil trade patterns. Earlier in the year, the U.S. temporarily became a net exporter of crude oil to Nigeria due to changes in refinery demand. Domestically, Nigeria’s refining sector, including facilities like the Dangote Refinery, continues to evolve, increasing the country’s capacity to process crude locally.
Nigeria’s position as the top African supplier to the U.S. underscores its strategic role in the global oil market, further solidifying its status as a key player in energy trade. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
