Nigeria Welcomes Commonwealth Games Baton, Champions Unity and Clean Oceans Campaign

Nigeria officially received the King’s Baton Relay today in Abuja, marking the countdown to the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The ceremony was led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who stood in for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside Hadiza Bala Usman, Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination.

The event also highlighted the “Commonwealth Clean Oceans Plastics Campaign,” a collaborative initiative between the Commonwealth Sport Movement, the Royal Commonwealth Society, and Nigeria’s National Sports Commission. The campaign brings together athletes, youth, and communities to tackle plastic pollution across member nations.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, and the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, were also in attendance. The ceremony symbolised Nigeria’s commitment to unity, cooperation, and environmental sustainability within the Commonwealth.
