The Nigerian Army has confirmed that its troops are currently engaged in a fierce gun battle with fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Buni Gari, a community in Yobe State, North-East Nigeria.

This development follows a renewed attack on the town by ISWAP terrorists, further highlighting the persistent security challenges in the region.

“Troops of Operation HADIN KAI currently in a fierce battle against ISWAP attack at Buni Gari, Yobe State. Details later,” the Army wrote in a statement shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday.

The intensity of the attack has yet again drawn national attention to the ongoing insurgency and the Nigerian military’s efforts to combat terrorism in the North-East. Buni Gari, located in Gujba Local Government Area, has seen repeated assaults by insurgents over the years.

Ongoing Security Concerns in Nigeria

This latest assault by ISWAP underscores the growing concerns over insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the North-East where terror groups like Boko Haram and its offshoot, ISWAP, continue to operate.

The military has yet to release full details of the operation or possible casualties, but residents report hearing gunfire and explosions since early Saturday.
