Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade, operating from the Forward Operating Base in Ikang, have successfully rescued eight civilians abducted by suspected militants following a rapid response operation carried out on December 29, 2025.
The operation was launched after the troops received credible intelligence from local residents that armed militants had intercepted a commercial boat along the Ikang–Cameroon waterways and kidnapped eight passengers, including six adults and two children. Acting immediately on the information, the soldiers pursued the assailants while sealing off potential escape routes and asserting control over the waterways.
Faced with the troops’ swift and coordinated advance, the militants reportedly abandoned the captives at the Ini-Abasi Fishing Port before fleeing through the creeks toward the open sea. The abandoned victims were subsequently located and recovered safely by the troops.
All eight rescued civilians were transported to the Brigade’s base, where they were properly documented and later reunited with their families. No casualties were recorded during the operation. Security personnel have since maintained sustained patrols in the area to prevent the fleeing suspects from regrouping or carrying out further criminal acts.
The Commander of 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General P. O. Alimikhena, praised the troops for their professionalism, speed and dedication to safeguarding lives and property. He also commended members of the local community for providing timely and reliable intelligence, describing their cooperation as crucial to the success of the rescue mission.
Brigadier General Alimikhena reassured residents of the Brigade’s determination to continue aggressive patrols and deny criminal elements freedom of operation within the region. He further urged the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies with useful information.
