Nigerian Government Announces Biennial Minimum Wage Review

The Nigerian government has confirmed that the minimum wage will now be reviewed every two years, a change from the previous five-year interval. The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, in Abia State.

Onyejeocha stated that this new timeline aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to workers, fulfilling his promise to review the minimum wage every three years. “We are not going to allow the minimum wage review to be delayed indefinitely. It used to be five years, but now, in less than two years, we will also review the minimum wage,” she said.

The decision follows a recent call by the Trade Union Congress for an annual review of the minimum wage to address economic challenges such as inflation. In line with Tinubu’s earlier approval, the minimum wage was raised to N70,000, with the promise of periodic adjustments every three years. However, Nigeria’s inflation rate, which surged to 34.60 percent in November 2024, has put additional pressure on workers, leading to discussions about more frequent reviews.
