The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the establishment of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic in Gwarinpa, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. This initiative, part of the national policy to enhance technological, vocational, and entrepreneurial training, was communicated in a letter dated January 9, 2025, from the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, to the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike. The letter was received by the FCT Minister’s office on January 16, 2025.
Dr. Alausa stated that the polytechnic is in line with the Federal Government’s strategic plan to ensure that every state in Nigeria has at least one federal polytechnic. He requested the FCT Minister to propose temporary and permanent sites for the institution’s take-off within Gwarinpa.
“In view of the above, Your Excellency is kindly requested to suggest the proposed locations for the Temporary and Permanent sites in Gwarinpa for take-off,” the letter read.
Dr. Alausa also noted that a Technical Team from the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) would inspect the recommended sites. The team’s findings would guide the final approval process for the proposed locations.
Additionally, the memo encouraged the possible takeover of existing tertiary institutions, should the FCT Minister deem it appropriate.
The establishment of this institution aligns with the government’s broader vision to expand access to quality vocational education, fostering skill development and entrepreneurship across the country. Further updates on site selection and the polytechnic’s launch timeline are expected in the coming months.
