Nigeria’s passport has been ranked 89th out of 199 countries in the 2026 edition of the Henley Passport Index, reflecting a modest shift in the country’s global travel standing.

The annual index, which measures passport strength based on visa-free and visa-on-arrival access, is compiled using exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) alongside expert analysis of global mobility trends.

In July last year, Nigeria’s passport climbed to 88th position, marking its strongest performance in five years. However, the ranking later declined to 94th place toward the end of the year before improving slightly to its current position in the latest update.

Henley & Partners, the global citizenship and residence advisory firm that publishes the index, said the rankings are grounded in IATA’s comprehensive travel data, which tracks access privileges across international destinations.

The index continues to serve as a key benchmark for assessing changes in global passport power and international mobility.
