In a move that will affect millions of Nigerians, the Joint Tax Board (JTB) has announced a significant increase in fees for driver’s licenses and vehicle number plates. The new pricing structure will come into effect on Sunday, June 8, 2025. The JTB, the apex body for Nigeria’s revenue authorities, has urged the public to take note of the price hikes and for all relevant government agencies to comply with the changes.

In a published advertorial, the JTB revealed the new rates for various categories of driver’s licenses and number plates. According to the announcement, the fee for a three-year motor vehicle driver’s license will now be N15,000, while the fee for a five-year license will rise to N21,000. For tricycle and motorcycle drivers, the cost for a three-year license will be N7,000, with the five-year license priced at N11,000.

The adjustment also includes changes in the cost of vehicle number plates, with prices varying by category. The new costs for vehicle plates are as follows:

  • Standard private vehicle number plate: N30,000
  • Standard commercial vehicle number plate: N30,000
  • Articulated vehicle number plate: N90,000
  • Dealer vehicle number plate: N100,000
  • Out-of-series number plate: N150,000
  • Fancy vehicle number plate: N400,000
  • Government standard vehicle number plate: N80,000
  • Government fancy vehicle number plate: N120,000

Motorcycle number plates will also see increases:

  • Motorcycle number plate: N12,000
  • Fancy motorcycle number plate: N50,000
  • Government standard motorcycle number plate: N20,000
  • Government fancy motorcycle number plate: N50,000

The price hikes, the JTB explained, are a result of the incorporation of enhanced security features in both the number plates and driver’s licenses, coupled with a rise in production costs.

For further details, the JTB has directed the public to consult the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) website at www.frsc.gov.ng or visit the Motor Licensing Authority (MLA) offices at State Internal Revenue Service branches and Motor Vehicle Administration Authorities nationwide.
