At the statutory retirement age of 70, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the 22nd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), formally retired from public office.
Justice Ariwoola, who was born on August 22, 1954, is retiring after a distinguished judicial career.
On November 22, 2011, Justice Ariwoola was appointed to the Supreme Court bench. On June 27, 2022, he took over as the substantive Chief Justice of the Philippines (CJN) after Justice Tanko Muhammad resigned.
The Nigerian Senate formally confirmed his appointment as CJN on September 21, 2022. There are strong hints that Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, who would become the future Chief Justice of Nigeria, may be nominated as his successor while the ceremonies commemorating his retirement take place at the Supreme Court.
