Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has described Nigeria’s democracy as a stabilising force in West Africa, emphasizing its role as a model for regional stability amid widespread political unrest.

In a press statement signed by his spokesman, Alkasim Abdulkadir, Tuggar made this declaration during the 2025 Democracy Day celebration on Wednesday.

Nigeria’s Democratic Resilience Amid Regional Challenges

Tuggar highlighted that despite the wave of military coups and unconstitutional transitions in parts of West Africa, Nigeria has remained committed to democratic principles. He credited the country’s ongoing stability to regular elections, peaceful power transitions, and adherence to constitutional frameworks.

“Nigeria stands as a beacon of hope and stability in the region,” the Minister said. “Our democratic institutions may not be perfect, but they remain resilient. In a time when democracy is under assault in parts of West Africa, Nigeria has continued to demonstrate that the rule of law, electoral accountability, and civic participation are essential pillars for long-term peace and development.”

Nigeria’s Role in Strengthening ECOWAS and Regional Peace

Tuggar’s remarks come as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) intensifies efforts to address recent military takeovers in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s firm support for diplomacy and democratic governance as core strategies in ECOWAS conflict resolution initiatives.

“Democracy is not just an internal affair,” he added. “It is our strategic contribution to regional peace. Our progress strengthens the African democratic project as a whole.”

Nigeria’s Historical Leadership in West African Democracy

The Minister further praised Nigeria’s longstanding contributions to democracy in the region—from peacekeeping missions in Liberia and Sierra Leone to leading recent ECOWAS engagements aimed at restoring civilian rule.

Analysts agree that Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous nation and largest economy, plays a crucial role in maintaining regional order. Its political direction is often viewed as a bellwether for broader West African governance trends.

Tuggar Commends Tinubu’s Governance, Economic Direction

Tuggar also applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, particularly his administration’s focus on economic recovery and political stability.

He expressed optimism about Nigeria’s democratic and developmental future:

“In the end, Nigeria will be better for it as the actions will lead to a future of shared prosperity.”
