Nigeria’s natural gas production has risen significantly, showing a 15.6% month-on-month increase, reaching 227,931.65 million standard cubic feet (mscf) in March 2025, according to the latest report from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

This rise comes as the nation seeks to boost its gas output amid global energy demands. On a year-on-year basis, Nigeria’s gas output also saw a marginal increase, moving from 198,353.62 mscf recorded in March 2024 to the current figure.

The breakdown of this output shows that out of the total 227,931.65 mscf, 119,552.75 mscf was associated gas, produced alongside crude oil. The remaining 108,378.90 mscf was non-associated gas, which is extracted independently of crude oil through extensive exploration and development efforts.

The Nigerian Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas), a key player in driving the nation’s energy policy, has been at the forefront of efforts to attract more investment into the gas sector, with a focus on enhancing production capabilities.

In a recent statement, Nigerian LNG Limited reaffirmed its commitment to expanding operations with the ambitious NLNG Train 7 project. This expansion, which aims to increase Nigeria’s LNG production capacity by 35%, will elevate production from 22 Million Tonnes Per Annum (mtpa) to 30 mtpa. The project will strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) market and solidify its status as a top-tier LNG supplier, especially given the country’s proven gas reserves of 202 trillion cubic feet, ranking it as the ninth-largest in the world.

The growth in gas output, along with strategic developments such as the NLNG Train 7 project, underpins Nigeria’s significant role in the global energy sector and highlights its efforts to maximize the potential of its vast gas reserves.
