On Monday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a groundbreaking policy aimed at revolutionizing healthcare human resource management in Nigeria. The National Policy on Health Workforce Migration is designed to address the pressing challenges in Nigeria’s health sector.

This strategic policy, supported by President Tinubu’s role as the AU Champion for Human Resources for Health and Community Health Delivery Partnership, tackles the critical issue of healthcare professional migration. It provides a comprehensive framework to manage and reverse this trend, focusing on building a robust and resilient workforce.

The policy introduces the Nigeria Human Health Resource Program, which ensures regular reviews of working conditions and enhances support for health workers, especially in rural and underserved areas. It aims to retain skilled professionals by creating an environment conducive to professional growth and stability.

A significant component of the policy is its emphasis on integrating advanced health technologies. It includes the development of digital health infrastructure such as Electronic Medical Records (EMR), telehealth services, and a comprehensive Health Workforce Registry. These innovations are expected to streamline healthcare delivery and ensure equitable distribution of health workers.

Capacity building is central to the policy, with a focus on continuous professional development and international training opportunities. It also includes provisions for the return and reintegration of Nigerian health professionals from the Diaspora, offering streamlined registration and attractive incentives to harness their expertise.

The policy advocates for reciprocal agreements with other nations to protect Nigeria’s interests and respects the rights of healthcare professionals. Additionally, it emphasizes work-life balance, including routine health checks, mental well-being support, and reasonable working hours to enhance job satisfaction and reduce burnout.

The National Human Resources for Health Program (#NHRHP), under @Fmohnigeria, will oversee the implementation of this policy in collaboration with state governments, ensuring alignment with broader sector-wide health objectives.

This policy marks a significant step towards securing the future of Nigeria’s healthcare system, promising improved access to quality care and setting the stage for transformative change under President Tinubu’s leadership. Stakeholders are encouraged to contribute to this vital initiative to realize the full potential of Nigeria’s healthcare system.
