Nigeria was plunged into yet another nationwide blackout on Wednesday following the collapse of the national electricity grid. Data obtained from the Independent System Operator (ISO) revealed that power generation nosedived from 2,917.83 megawatts (MW) to a meagre 1.5MW between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.
The collapse left millions of homes and businesses across the country without electricity, disrupting daily activities and critical services. The latest incident adds to the recurring challenges plaguing Nigeria’s power sector, which has long struggled with poor infrastructure, gas supply constraints, and transmission failures.
Authorities have yet to provide details on the cause of Wednesday’s collapse or when full supply will be restored. However, the development is expected to further fuel public frustration over the country’s unstable power situation, which continues to undermine economic productivity and quality of life.
