
Vice President Kashim Shettima assured donor organizations and development partners of the Nigerian government’s unwavering support for displaced persons, both within and beyond Nigeria’s borders. Speaking during a visit from a United Nations delegation led by Mr. Raouf Mazou, Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, Shettima emphasized the administration’s commitment to humanitarian efforts and sustainable resettlement strategies.
Shettima praised the UN for its past assistance and highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to alleviating the suffering of those displaced by conflict and natural disasters. He assured that Nigeria would continue to accommodate displaced Africans and strengthen partnerships with the UN to address these challenges.
Mr. Mazou acknowledged Nigeria’s exemplary treatment of refugees and discussed shifting from humanitarian aid to sustainable development. He noted the importance of self-reliance for refugees and the need for continued support to host communities.
The meeting also included comments from UNHCR officials on Nigeria’s adherence to international conventions and its role in fostering better refugee treatment. The Vice President’s pledge and the UN’s focus on sustainable solutions mark a significant step in addressing displacement issues.
