The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed its unwavering support for Nigeria and other member states accused by Niger Republic of sponsoring terrorist activities.
Niger Republic recently alleged that Nigeria and other ECOWAS nations were collaborating with France to destabilize the country. However, in a statement issued on Thursday, ECOWAS dismissed the claims as baseless.
“The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) expresses deep concern over these allegations against Nigeria and other member states,” the statement said. “The Commission firmly supports Nigeria and other ECOWAS member states against unfounded accusations of sponsoring terrorism.”
Highlighting Nigeria’s longstanding role in promoting peace and security across Africa, ECOWAS noted that the country has consistently demonstrated its commitment to regional stability.
“For years, Nigeria has been a key supporter of peace and security, not just in the West African subregion but across the African continent. The recent achievements of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), led by Nigeria, are clear evidence of this commitment,” the statement added.
ECOWAS further rejected any suggestion that Nigeria, a nation known for its generosity and dedication to regional stability, would be involved in acts of terrorism. It also called on all states in the region to prioritize dialogue and stability while avoiding unsubstantiated accusations.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government on Thursday categorically denied Niger Republic’s allegations. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, dismissed the claims made by Niger’s military leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, as entirely unfounded.
“These allegations exist solely in the realm of imagination. Nigeria has never engaged in any alliance, overt or covert, with France—or any other country—to destabilize Niger Republic,” Idris said in a statement.
