NiMet Issues Warning Over Early Rain: Farmers Told to Hold Off Planting, Avoid Drinking Rainwater

Share

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning to farmers and residents following the early rainfall in several parts of the country, including Lagos and Ogun states.
NiMet described these showers as “pseudo rains”, cautioning that they do not mark the official start of the rainy season. The agency warned that planting crops at this stage could lead to crop failure, as dry conditions are likely to return after the brief rains.
The agency also advised against drinking rainwater from these early showers, highlighting potential health risks. Despite the rainfall, NiMet reassured the public that flooding is unlikely at present, due to dry ground conditions.
Residents and farmers are encouraged to wait for consistent rainfall before planting crops or collecting rainwater for domestic use. NiMet is expected to release its full 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) on February 10, providing a clearer outlook for the year’s weather patterns. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
