The management of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and agency-based unions have agreed to postpone their planned strike, originally scheduled for February, until further notice.

The decision followed a meeting in Abuja on Monday, February 3, 2025, between NiMet leadership and representatives from the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government Owned Companies (SSASCGOC), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE).

NUATE President Comrade Benjamin Nnabue, who led the negotiations on behalf of the unions, emphasized that strikes are always a last resort. “These issues with NiMet management may be inherited, but government is a continuum. Our priority remains the overall welfare of NiMet staff,” he stated.

The unions explained that the strike postponement was based on agreements reached with NiMet’s management, ensuring that workers’ concerns were central to the discussions.

Meanwhile, NiMet’s Director General and CEO, Prof. Charles Anosike, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to workers’ welfare, emphasizing that solutions must align with economic realities. “We are not over the line yet on these issues, but I appreciate the unions’ leadership for agreeing to postpone the strike. This gives us time to continue working towards securing the necessary approvals from the federal government,” he said.
