NIS to Deliver Passports Within One Week as Production Capacity Rises

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) will now deliver passports to Nigerians within one week following the centralisation of passport production for the first time in 62 years. Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this on Thursday during an inspection of the new Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja.

The minister explained that while old machines could only produce between 250 and 300 passports daily, the new system has the capacity to process 4,000 to 5,000 passports every day. He noted that the upgraded facility would enable NIS to meet daily demand within four to five hours of operation.

Dr Tunji-Ojo said the initiative, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda, represents a game-changer for passport processing in Nigeria. He added that centralisation and automation will improve efficiency, ensure uniformity, and enhance the global integrity of Nigerian travel documents.
