The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has resolved to stage a nationwide protest on Tuesday, February 4, in opposition to the 50% increase in telecom tariffs recently approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The decision was reached during the National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting of the NLC, as the union seeks to resist policies that could worsen economic hardship for Nigerian workers and citizens.
NLC President Joe Ajaero, in a statement titled “50% Telecom Tariff Hike: Another Burden Too Harsh!”, condemned the move, describing it as an assault on workers’ welfare and a gift to corporate interests at the expense of the people.
“Telecommunication services are essential for daily life, yet an average Nigerian worker already spends 10% of their wages on telecom charges. With this increase, workers earning ₦70,000 minimum wage will see their telecom expenses rise from ₦7,000 to ₦10,500 per month, a cost that is simply unsustainable,” Ajaero stated.
The NLC insists the tariff hike must be reversed, warning that the protest will serve as a clear message to the government that workers will resist policies that deepen poverty and economic hardship.
