FG Reaffirms Commitment to Gas-Driven Economic Growth

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) and its partners have launched five mini-Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s Gas Revolution Agenda.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Thursday, signaled the commencement of construction on the NNPC Prime LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete plants. With a combined capacity of 97 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (mmscf/d), the projects represent a strategic partnership between NNPC Ltd and private investors to enhance energy sufficiency, industrial support, and carbon emission reduction.

NNPC Ltd holds stakes in three of the five projects:

90% in Prime LNG

50% in NGML/Gasnexus LNG

10% in BUA LNG

Highland LNG and LNG Arete are developed by other private companies.

Speaking at the ceremony, NNPC Ltd’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the Federal Government’s gas-to-power agenda, emphasizing that natural gas is pivotal to Nigeria’s industrialization, job creation, and economic diversification.

“These Mini LNG facilities will ensure the efficient transportation of gas over long distances, providing a cleaner and cheaper source of energy to households, mobility, industries, and businesses. This is particularly important for regions that currently lack access to gas pipeline infrastructure,” Kyari stated.

He credited President Bola Tinubu’s unwavering support for NNPC’s upstream and gas infrastructure projects, underscoring gas as a key driver of economic growth and energy security.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, hailed the initiative as an unprecedented milestone in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to harnessing the country’s abundant gas resources for national development, carbon footprint reduction, and improved livelihoods.

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, NNPC Ltd, and its partners for siting the plants in the state. He highlighted the investment and employment opportunities the projects would create, pledging the state government’s support through manpower supply, security, and community collaboration.

NNPC Ltd Chairman, Chief Pius Akinyelure, described the launch as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s energy sector. He stated that it aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, ushering in a new era of sustainable energy, industrial growth, and energy security.

With the launch of these mini-LNG plants, Nigeria is poised to deepen domestic gas utilization, expand access to cleaner energy, and accelerate economic transformation.
