The Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, Bayo Ojulari, has announced that the company will overhaul and develop existing downstream infrastructure nationwide to enhance collaboration and efficiency within the energy sector.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2025 OTL Africa Downstream Energy Week in Lagos on Monday, Ojulari said the move underscores NNPC’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s oil and gas value chain.
“At NNPC, we are committed to deploying additional infrastructure across the oil and gas value chain while revamping our existing downstream infrastructure nationwide,” he said. “These assets will be accessible to partners seeking to store and transport products, supporting strategic alliances and collaboration in the downstream sector.”
The OTL Africa Downstream Energy Week, regarded as Africa’s leading forum for downstream and midstream energy stakeholders, brings together policymakers, operators, and industry service providers to discuss trends and innovations shaping the continent’s energy landscape.
Ojulari, who spoke on the theme “Energy Sustainability: Beyond Boundaries & Competition,” emphasized that competition alone is no longer sufficient to drive efficiency. He urged stakeholders to focus on collaboration, sustainability, and resilience to achieve long-term sectoral growth.
He further highlighted that the introduction of strategic policies, fiscal incentives, and transparent regulatory frameworks — particularly the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) — has catalyzed growth in the sector. This, he noted, has created the need for new skill sets and fresh investments in areas such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), compressed natural gas (CNG), and mini-liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects.
Ojulari encouraged participants to collaborate on redefining sustainable energy systems through innovation and partnerships that promote decarbonisation and economic development.
Meanwhile, the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), chaired by Kawu Sumaila, has announced plans for a comprehensive investigative hearing to address persistent challenges in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector. The probe aims to identify bottlenecks and propose lasting solutions to enhance the sector’s performance.
At Jocomms, we recognize that such developments signal a critical step toward modernizing Nigeria’s energy infrastructure and ensuring long-term stability in the downstream market.
