The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has strongly refuted allegations circulating in a viral video that it sells adulterated petrol. In a statement on Thursday, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, emphasized the company’s commitment to quality control and assured the public that its retail operations adhere to rigorous standards.
“NNPC Retail Ltd does not deal in adulterated products as it adheres to rigorous standards and quality control measures at every stage in its operations to ensure that only high quality, safe, and reliable petroleum products are available at its stations nationwide,” Soneye stated.
The controversy began when a video surfaced showing a customer claiming to have purchased tainted petrol—allegedly from an NNPC outlet at the Keffi Flyover in Nasarawa State. The video depicted a man pouring a dark liquid, which he claimed was fuel bought from the outlet, into a bottle.
Soneye dismissed these allegations, explaining that the company’s strict policies prohibit dispensing fuel into bottles or jerrycans, as shown in the video. “We have carried out spot checks at all our outlets and found this claim to be false,” he said. “The product was not, and could not have been bought from any NNPC Retail outlet.”
NNPCL urged the public to disregard the claims in the video, calling them “spurious” and warning against what it described as “selfish and unpatriotic elements” who seek to damage the company’s reputation. Soneye also highlighted NNPCL’s dedication to maintaining “accurate pump integrity with regular inspection and calibration to ensure consistency across our stations nationwide.”
The statement underscores NNPCL’s commitment to upholding quality and safety standards across its fuel distribution network in Nigeria, even as it faces public scrutiny and challenges to its reputation.
