The North-West geo-political zone has officially rescheduled its zonal public hearing for the ongoing constitutional review to July 18th and 19th, 2025. This follows a previous postponement due to the mourning period for the late Alhaji Aminu Dantata, who passed away in Abu Dhabi on June 28th and was laid to rest in Madina, Saudi Arabia.
The public hearing was initially planned to take place in Kano, the capital of Kano State, but was delayed following the Senate’s decision to observe the national mourning for Dantata.
Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate, made the announcement during plenary on Wednesday. In his statement, Senator Barau, who chairs the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, encouraged active participation from Senators representing all 21 senatorial districts in the North-West zone. He urged them to mobilise their constituents and ensure that they attend the crucial hearing, highlighting it as a key opportunity for public engagement and citizen input in the constitutional process.
Additionally, Senator Barau called on Nigerians within the zone to submit memoranda regarding areas of the constitution they believe should be amended, reinforcing the significance of public contribution to the review process.
The constitutional review exercise, which aims to reshape Nigeria’s governance framework, continues to garner attention across all six geo-political zones, with public hearings already held in the remaining regions on July 4th and 5th.
The North-West zone’s participation in this process is seen as crucial in strengthening the inclusivity and fairness of the review, which is expected to have lasting implications for Nigeria’s political landscape.
