The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended operations on the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor following a derailment that occurred on Saturday evening near Agbor, Delta State.

According to an NRC statement released on Sunday, the incident happened at about 7:30 p.m. at Kilometer 212+8m and involved two of the train’s seven coaches. Preliminary investigations indicate that suspected track vandalism may have caused the derailment.

The NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed that all passengers were safely evacuated and fully accounted for.

“We are pleased to confirm that all passengers on board were safely evacuated to Agbor, and everyone has been fully accounted for. No casualties or injuries were recorded,” Opeifa said.

He added that recovery teams, supported by security operatives, are currently working at the site. Train services along the route have been temporarily suspended to allow for a comprehensive security and safety audit of the track and related infrastructure.

“As a precautionary measure, train services on the corridor have been temporarily suspended today to enable a thorough security and safety review,” Opeifa noted.

The derailment comes just four days after services resumed on October 29, 2025, following an earlier suspension that began on August 2 due to recurring technical faults.

Stretching over 300 kilometres, the Warri–Itakpe line is Nigeria’s longest modern rail corridor, linking Delta and Kogi States and serving as a major transport artery for passengers and freight.

The corporation expressed regret for the disruption and assured passengers that normal operations would resume once the track is certified safe. NRC also confirmed that affected passengers are eligible for refunds through authorized ticketing outlets. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
