NYSC Members Urge FG to Implement Promised N77,000 Allowance

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members across Nigeria are calling on the Federal Government to fulfill its promise of a N77,000 monthly allowance, as many struggle with rising costs of living and economic challenges. The call for implementation comes as inflation and economic pressures weigh heavily on young Nigerians completing their mandatory service year.

NYSC members, also known as “corpers,” have voiced their concerns over the inadequacy of the current allowance in meeting their basic needs, especially as prices for food, transportation, and housing continue to climb. Many argue that the proposed N77,000 stipend would provide critical support, helping them to cover living expenses and contribute to the local economy.

“We are finding it difficult to make ends meet with the current allowance, especially given the recent economic situation in the country. The N77,000 allowance would go a long way in alleviating some of our hardships,” said one corps member based in Lagos.

The Federal Government had previously pledged to increase the monthly allowance for NYSC members to N77,000, but there has been no official update on the timeline for its implementation. This delay has led to growing frustration and anxiety among corps members, who see the allowance as essential support during their year of national service.

Youth advocacy groups and civil society organizations have also thrown their support behind the corps members’ call, urging the government to act quickly to provide the promised financial assistance.

As NYSC members continue to contribute to communities across the country through teaching, healthcare, and other essential services, they hope the government will prioritize the allowance adjustment to ease the economic pressures they face.
