The Benin Palace has refuted claims of the existence of any title known as Iyeki General or Iyaloja within the Benin Kingdom or anywhere in Edo State, describing such positions as alien to the ancient Benin traditional system.

In an official palace publication released in Benin City, the revered monarch cautioned individuals parading themselves with such titles to desist immediately. The statement also advised the Edo State Government and political actors to avoid politicizing the sacred market traditions of the Benin Kingdom.

According to the palace, the establishment of any market within Edo land requires the direct approval of the Oba of Benin who traditionally provides the necessary spiritual altars for its protection. A designated person from the market serves as the custodian or priestess of the shrine referred to as Iyeki, meaning mother of the market.

The statement emphasized that this tradition dates back to the Ogiso era and must not be altered or influenced by political interests. The palace also expressed concern over past attempts to politicize the Iyeki institution, particularly referencing the period when one Blacky Ogiamein served as spokesperson of the Iyeki group in Edo State.

Reaffirming the independence of each market priestess, the palace declared that all Iyeki are autonomous and that no centralized authority such as an Iyeki General or Iyaloja exists in Benin tradition.

The Oba further reiterated his commitment to preserving the sanctity of Edo customs and warned against any acts that could undermine the cultural heritage of the kingdom.

All Iyeki across Edo State have been summoned to appear at the Benin Palace on Wednesday, October 9, 2025, at 12 noon for further briefing.
