Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticized President Bola Tinubu over the reported purchase of a new presidential jet, saying it reflects a disconnect from the suffering of ordinary Nigerians. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Obi questioned the justification for such an extravagant expenditure—reportedly over ₦150 billion—while basic amenities like healthcare remain in disrepair. “I will never buy a new jet when 80 per cent of our primary health centres are not functioning,” he said.

Obi, who served as governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014, emphasized his frugal leadership style, stating that he never used bulletproof vehicles and drove a Peugeot 406 during his tenure. He dismissed concerns about the security risks of not using high-end vehicles or private jets, arguing that genuine leaders who serve the people selflessly should not fear for their lives. “If your people are dying, you should be ready to die,” he said, stressing that insecurity is not an excuse for luxury in government.

The former governor underscored the need for a president who leads with empathy and lives modestly in solidarity with the people. “Leadership without compassion does not exist,” Obi said, insisting that Nigerians yearn for a leader who understands and shares their daily struggles. His remarks come amid increasing public frustration over the rising cost of governance, poverty, and inadequate social services across the country.
