The Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS), in collaboration with the Joint Tax Board (JTB), has officially launched the 2025 edition of the Single Interstate Road Tax Sticker (SIRTS), a landmark initiative aimed at eliminating multiple taxation and streamlining interstate road tax compliance across Nigeria.

The unveiling, which took place in Abeokuta, was attended by key stakeholders from the transport, manufacturing, and logistics sectors. The new SIRTS is designed as a single, annual tax sticker that will be recognized by all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, enabling commercial vehicle operators to move seamlessly across state boundaries without facing redundant levies or harassment.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to ease of doing business and to eliminating bottlenecks in Nigeria’s road transport system,” said OGIRS Executive Chairman, Mr. Olugbenga Olaleye. “With SIRTS, transporters can now operate more efficiently, without the fear of extortion or unnecessary taxation from multiple jurisdictions.”

As part of the broader tax harmonization effort, OGIRS has also introduced the Single Haulage Fee (SHF), a uniform system for the collection of charges on goods loading and off-loading. On August 3, 2025, OGIRS organized a sensitization workshop in Lagos for transporters and members of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), aimed at creating awareness around both SIRTS and SHF.

Key Benefits of the Reform:

Eliminates Multiple Taxation: Commercial drivers no longer need to pay separate road taxes in every state.

Improves Logistics and Trade: Reduces checkpoint delays and administrative hassles for interstate transporters.

Promotes Compliance: By simplifying the process, authorities expect a rise in voluntary tax compliance.

Supports Economic Growth: The reform is expected to foster a more business-friendly environment, especially for transport-dependent sectors.

The Joint Tax Board has endorsed the initiative as a model for inter-agency collaboration and an important step toward national tax reform.

Transporters and stakeholders are encouraged to obtain their 2025 SIRTS through designated channels and adhere to the guidelines to avoid penalties.
