The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has ratified the indefinite suspension of Senator Gbenga Daniel, a former governor of the state, over allegations of anti-party activities.
The suspension, which also includes a key loyalist, Kunle Folarin, was confirmed by the party’s State Working Committee (SWC) on Tuesday.
According to a statement issued by the party’s spokesperson, Nuberu Olufemi, the action stems from the findings of disciplinary committees set up by the senators’ respective wards in the Sagamu Local Government Area.
The committee for Ward 4 was convened to investigate “alleged misconduct bordering on anti-party activities” committed by Senator Daniel, who currently represents Ogun East.
The party alleges that both Daniel and Folarin, who was investigated by a committee from Ward 6, failed to respond to written invitations to appear before the panels to defend themselves against the charges.
“They wrote to the members under investigation, inviting them to the disciplinary meetings at which they were to be heard and allowed to present evidence in their defense or request pardon from the party,” Olufemi stated.
“However, both members failed to respond to the invitations extended to them in writing, failed to provide a written defense, and failed to attend the disciplinary meetings.”
The statement further accused the suspended members of attempting to obstruct the investigation.
“The committees received notice that the members under investigation had been harassing party members and warning members against cooperating with the committees,” the spokesperson added. “They had been using their statuses within the party to pressure party members to withdraw the petitions against them.”
In the absence of the defendants, the committees proceeded with their deliberations, hearing from witnesses and considering documentary evidence before recommending suspension, a decision subsequently ratified by the state leadership.
The indefinite suspension marks a significant escalation of internal strife within the Ogun APC, involving a high-profile figure who once governed the state.
