Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines and Spokesperson for Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), Professor Obiora Okonkwo, says Nigeria’s ambition to achieve a $1 trillion economy cannot be realised without a strong and competitive aviation sector.
Speaking at the launch of United Nigeria Airlines’ Abuja–Accra flight, Okonkwo described aviation as “the oxygen of modern commerce,” stressing that economic growth depends on efficient air connectivity.
He identified multiple taxation, high operating costs, and limited access to affordable credit as major obstacles facing local airlines, urging the government to support the sector through single-digit loans and policy reforms.
“If we are serious about a trillion-dollar economy, we must prioritise aviation. No economy can thrive without a viable air transport system,” he said.
Representing the Minister of Aviation, the Permanent Secretary, Dr Ibrahim Kana, reaffirmed government’s commitment to developing the industry, citing ongoing reforms such as duty-free import of aircraft and spare parts and improved financing access.
Analysts say a vibrant aviation sector could boost trade, tourism, and regional integration, but warn that Nigeria’s trillion-dollar ambition may remain out of reach without structural reforms. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
