The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) has rescheduled the local government elections to January 18, 2025.

Dr. Joseph Aremo, Chairman of ODIEC, announced the new date during a stakeholders’ meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Akure.

Originally set for December 16, 2023, the election was first postponed to February 17, then to July 13, and later indefinitely before the new date was confirmed.

Aremo clarified that the election was not canceled but rescheduled due to political parties’ non-compliance with electoral guidelines and processes.

He assured residents that the commission is fully prepared to conduct a free, fair, and transparent election. Political parties that held primaries before the postponements are asked to submit the validated list of candidates to the commission.

Key dates for the election process include:

  • Completion of primaries and candidate validation: November 25 to December 7
  • Submission of candidate forms and lists: By December 9
  • Substitution of candidates: December 12 to December 13
  • Collection and submission of nomination forms: December 16 to December 18
  • Campaign period: December 23 to January 16, 2025 (ending at midnight)

The distribution of non-sensitive materials to the 18 local governments will take place from January 6 to January 10, 2025.

Mr. Olaoluwa Adesanya, Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), expressed his satisfaction with ODIEC’s preparation and assured the commission and residents of IPAC’s commitment to the election
