Onyinyechi Mark Breaks Paralympic Record in Powerlifting

Nigeria’s Onyinyechi Mark has set a new Paralympic record in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category by lifting an impressive 145kg, surpassing the previous record held by fellow Nigerian Lucy Ejike. Mark’s extraordinary performance has nearly guaranteed Nigeria its first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. With one lift remaining, Mark’s closest rival is attempting 138kg on her final attempt, while Mark aims to extend her record with a planned lift of 147kg.

Team Nigeria, renowned for its prowess in powerlifting and athletics, continues to shine at the Paralympics. The team secured ten medals, including four golds, at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Nigerian athletes, such as Lucy Ejike and Bose Omolayo, have previously set world records and earned multiple gold medals, underscoring the country’s strong commitment to supporting and developing its para-athletes.
