The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, following a tragic stampede at a children’s carnival she organized.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan.
In a statement, police spokesperson Adewale Osifeso reported that “eight individuals have been arrested for their various roles in the event.” Among those detained are Silekunola, 31, and Fasasi Abdulahi, the 56-year-old principal of the school.
Other arrested individuals include Genesis Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisolaja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin, whose ages range from 25 to 52 years.
The stampede resulted in the heartbreaking loss of 35 minors, with six others in critical condition and receiving medical treatment. “So far, 35 minors have been reported dead, and 6 others are critically injured,” the statement noted, highlighting the severity of the incident.
The investigation has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, where the Deputy Commissioner of Police is leading the inquiry. Osifeso assured the public that “justice will be served accordingly.”
In response to the tragedy, the police have increased their presence in the area to ensure peace and security. Residents have been advised not to panic, as high-level patrols and visible police presence will be maintained.
“The Oyo State Police Command sympathizes with all the families and loved ones affected by the tragedy,” the statement expressed, offering condolences to the victims’ families.
