Open for Business: President Tinubu Set for Historic UK State Visit

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to make a historic state visit to the United Kingdom, becoming the first Nigerian leader to be hosted at Windsor Castle. The visit, scheduled for March 17–19, marks a significant moment in Nigeria–UK relations, coming 37 years after the last Nigerian state visit in 1989 by then-military President Ibrahim Babangida, and 66 years after Nigeria gained independence.

Under President Tinubu, Nigeria has strengthened its ties with the UK, elevating the relationship in November 2024 to a Strategic Partnership anchored on six pillars: growth and jobs; enhanced mutual national security; migration, justice, and home affairs; international collaboration; a modernised development partnership; and sustained people-to-people links.

During the visit, President Tinubu will hold meetings with UK leaders, business executives, and the Nigerian diaspora—one of the largest and most vibrant globally. The meetings will highlight Nigeria’s open-for-business agenda and ongoing economic reforms, including fiscal restructuring, currency stabilization, and measures to reduce inflation, which have enhanced the country’s investment climate.

Energy and security will also feature prominently. Nigeria, home to Africa’s largest gas reserves, and the UK, a petroleum economy, are expected to explore cooperation on energy security, technology, and financing. Security cooperation will build on the UK–Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership, addressing terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and farmer-herder conflicts.

This visit underscores Nigeria’s growing global influence and continental leadership, advancing the Renewed Hope agenda and positioning the country as a strategic partner in trade, investment, and regional stability. The Tinubu administration is committed to ensuring that the outcomes of this historic engagement translate into tangible economic, security, and diplomatic results.
