Out of 1,955,069 candidates who sat for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), more than 1.5 million scored below 200, according to data released Monday by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The analysis revealed that only 420,415 candidates—just over 21%—scored above 200, the benchmark many institutions use for admission consideration.

Further breakdown of the results showed that:

  • 7,658 candidates scored between 300 and 319
  • 4,756 candidates scored above 320

JAMB also disclosed that 40,247 underage candidates were granted special permission to take the exam, allowing them to demonstrate what the board called “exceptional abilities.” However, only 467 of these candidates—just 1.16%—met the threshold for such classification, with their performance in the next three evaluation stages still pending.
