The Federal Government has revealed that more than 420 federal roads, bridges, and other infrastructure projects have been completed or significantly advanced under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. This was disclosed at the opening of the 33rd Engineering Assembly held Tuesday in Abuja.

Senator Barinada Mpigi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, in a message delivered by Ashley Emenike, praised the contributions of engineers to national development, while highlighting the successes recorded through Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” including projects like the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway.

However, Mpigi raised alarms over increasing engineering failures such as collapsed buildings and crumbling infrastructure, blaming poor compliance, quackery, and regulatory lapses. He pledged the Senate’s support for COREN in tightening enforcement and promoting adherence to engineering standards.

Former Minister of Power, Barth Nnaji, also urged the government to invest in innovation hubs and dedicated funds to empower homegrown engineering solutions. He cited China as an example of a nation transformed by engineers in leadership roles and called on Nigerian engineers to become strategic policy influencers.

COREN Registrar Okorie Uche and NSE President Margaret Oguntala both emphasized the need for professionalism, reforms in engineering education, and better compensation to uplift the sector and ensure sustainable national development.
