Two powerful earthquakes struck off Davao Oriental on Friday, killing at least nine people and affecting more than 8,000 residents, officials said.

The first quake, magnitude 7.4, hit late Friday night, followed hours later by a 6.8 aftershock. The tremors among the strongest in recent years triggered brief tsunami warnings and sent thousands fleeing to higher ground.

Authorities reported 225 homes destroyed and nearly 500 others damaged, along with power outages and cracked roads. Over 500 people were injured, while more than 100,000 across Mindanao felt the impact.

Rescue teams and soldiers have been deployed to hard-hit towns including Mati, Manay, and Lupon. Relief efforts are ongoing as aftershocks, now numbering over 800, continue to shake the region.

Officials urged residents to stay alert and avoid damaged structures until they are declared safe.
