Osun State mourns the passing of a revered monarch, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran, the Owa-Obokun of Ijesaland, whose death was confirmed in a statement by the Asiwaju of Ijesaland, Chief Yinka Fasuyi, on Thursday. The monarch, who ascended the throne in 1982 and ruled for 42 years, was described as a symbol of Yoruba royalty and intellectualism.
In a heartfelt tribute, Fasuyi expressed the profound loss felt by the Ijesa people, writing, “An Era Comes To An Abrupt End! The Lion Departs The Forest! The Torch Bearer Of Oduduwa Relocates!” He continued, “The Pride Of Yoruba Traditional Intellectualism Exits! The Last Of The Titans Bids Farewell! Ijesaland Celebrates The Life Of Her Idol!”
Before the announcement, there had been anxiety over Oba Aromolaran’s health, as he was reported to be indisposed. His passing marks the end of an era for Ijesaland, with many hailing his reign as monumental in the history of the community.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also expressed his sorrow via his X account, recalling the late monarch’s fatherly warmth. Atiku, who had a personal connection to Oba Aromolaran, described him as “a symbol of courage, boldness, and discipline emblematic of the Ijesha people.”
Oba Aromolaran, who celebrated his 80th birthday in October 2017, was not only a paramount ruler but also served as the Chairman of the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers. His legacy as a leader who upheld the values and traditions of Ijesaland will continue to be remembered by his people and the Yoruba community at large.
The Ijesa community, both at home and in the diaspora, joins together in mourning the loss of a king whose reign shaped the history and culture of the region.
