The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northern leaders have endorsed Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as their consensus candidate for the party’s National Chairman ahead of the national convention.
The decision was announced by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, who emphasized that the move is intended to promote unity within the party ahead of the convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan. Turaki has formally submitted his nomination and expression-of-interest forms at the PDP national secretariat.
In defending the northern consensus choice, Turaki noted that selecting leaders by consensus has been a longstanding tradition in the PDP, aimed at ensuring cohesion and stability. Turaki’s endorsement has also received backing from a group of lawyers in Kebbi State, his home state.
However, the endorsement has not been without controversy. The Kebbi State chapter of the PDP reportedly rejected the northern consensus adoption, stating that the decision was made without proper consultation with local party structures.
This development marks a significant step in the party’s preparations for the leadership election and could influence internal dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
