The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially scheduled its National Elective Convention for November 15–16, 2025, to be held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
In a communiqué released at the end of its meeting on Thursday in Abuja, the PDP NEC approved the Schedule of Activities and Timetable for the convention, which will see the election of new national officers to steer the party’s affairs ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The NEC directed PDP National Chairman, Iliya Damagum, and National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, to formally notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in line with Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and relevant party regulations.
As part of its preparations, the NEC also approved the membership composition of the National Convention Committee and the Zoning Committee, aimed at ensuring a smooth, credible, and transparent convention.
Reaffirming its position as Nigeria’s leading opposition platform, the NEC stressed that the PDP remains “strong, united, cohesive, stable, and focused”, and committed to leading a national movement to rescue the country from the “catastrophic misrule” of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a decisive move, the NEC directed the National Working Committee to pursue legal action to reclaim the seats of PDP-elected lawmakers who have defected to other parties. Citing Sections 68(1)(g) and 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the party emphasized that such defections were unlawful and void, as there were no recognized divisions or mergers within the PDP.
NEC also expressed concern over the alleged involvement of some PDP members in activities of rival parties and urged them to recommit themselves to the PDP, noting that dual membership is prohibited under Nigerian law.
Reiterating its readiness to collaborate with like-minded Nigerians and groups, the NEC declared that the PDP remains “the platform of choice” for restoring responsible leadership in Nigeria. It vowed to play a leading role in building a people-oriented government capable of defeating the APC in the 2027 elections.
The council adjourned and scheduled its next (102nd) NEC meeting for Monday, August 25, 2025.
