Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, says he will not reject members of the newly formed opposition coalition, including those who served in past administrations widely criticised for failure, arguing that their experience is crucial to reforming Nigeria.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Obi said that those who have been part of failed governments bring valuable insights that can help avoid future pitfalls.

“In fact, even some who have been in that government, their experience is critical,” Obi said. “One of the major companies in the world hired two people who have worked in failed companies because they can tell you why they failed.

“You need the experience of those who have failed and those who have succeeded to move on, and I need everyone. It is a critical experience because they know what can fail a system and they know what was wrong with the system.”

The former Anambra State governor made these comments in response to criticisms that his participation in a coalition with former government officials contradicts his message of change and reform.

Obi also dismissed ongoing speculation that he may be considering a vice-presidential slot under a possible Atiku Abubakar candidacy in 2027. He stated clearly that such an arrangement has not been discussed.

Asked directly whether he would accept being Atiku’s running mate, Obi said: “Nothing of such has been discussed so far.”

He then reaffirmed his commitment to contesting for the office of the President in 2027.
