The Kaduna State Police Command has formally invited former governor Malam Nasir el-Rufai and six key officials of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for questioning over allegations of criminal conspiracy and incitement of public disturbance.
The invitation is connected to a violent incident last Saturday where suspected thugs disrupted the inauguration of an ADC transition committee in the state, injuring several people and damaging property.
In a letter dated September 4, 2025, and addressed to the Kaduna ADC Chairman, the Police Command stated that el-Rufai and the six party members are under investigation for “criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance of public peace, mischief and causing grievous hurt.”
The listed ADC members summoned are Bashir Sa’idu, Jafaru Sani, Ubaidullah Mohammed, Nasiru Maikano, Aminu Abita, and Ahmed Rufa’i Hussaini.
The police have requested the party chairman to bring the named individuals to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) office on Monday, September 8, 2025, to clarify the allegations.
This development follows the police’s action of sealing off the ADC’s state secretariat earlier this week.
Background to the Invitation
The move by the police stems from a violent event on Saturday, August 31. According to reports, armed hoodlums wielding cutlasses, clubs, and stones stormed the venue of the ADC event, attacking attendees and vandalizing vehicles.
The police spokesperson for the Kaduna Command, Mansir Hassan, stated that the party organized the event without “prior notification” to security agencies, despite “repeated warnings” about the required protocol.
However, the ADC has pushed back against the police’s actions. The party has accused the Kaduna police force of partisanship and attempting to “criminalise opposition politics,” suggesting the investigation is a politically motivated move to intimidate its members.
The invitation of a high-profile figure like former Governor el-Rufai, who has been a dominant force in the state’s politics, is expected to draw significant national attention and intensify scrutiny of the political climate in Kaduna State.
As of now, el-Rufai and the ADC have not issued an official public response to the police invitation.
