Police Urge Organisers to Cancel April 7 Protest

Authorities have called on the organisers of a nationwide protest planned for Monday, April 7, 2025, to reconsider and suspend their plans.

The protest, spearheaded by the Take-It-Back (TIB) movement, was scheduled in response to various pressing national concerns. However, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), through a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, described the timing of the protest as inappropriate, noting that it coincides with the newly designated National Police Day.

“In line with global best practices in recognising the achievements of policing institutions, the Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared April 7 as National Police Day,” the statement read. “Choosing this same date for a national protest appears questionable and is widely perceived as a deliberate and unpatriotic attempt to discredit the Nigeria Police and undermine the spirit of the day.”

The police urged the protest organisers to call off the planned demonstrations, citing the significance of the day and the anticipated presence of high-profile dignitaries, including international guests and foreign police chiefs, who will be participating in events celebrating the contributions of the police to national security.

While acknowledging the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly, the Force expressed concerns over the motive behind holding a protest on a day meant to honour the resilience and service of police officers.

“The Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of Inspector-General Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, remains committed to upholding the law and protecting citizens’ rights,” the statement continued. “However, we advise the organisers and those intending to join the protest to instead pursue meaningful dialogue by engaging with the appropriate arms of government to press their demands.”
