Electricity supply is steadily returning to tens of thousands of homes and businesses across San Francisco following a major outage on Saturday that disrupted service for about 130,000 customers, according to Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E).
PG&E said the blackout was triggered by a fire at one of its electrical substations. By Sunday evening, the number of customers still without power had dropped to roughly 14,000 as restoration efforts continued.
The utility company stated that full service is expected to be restored to all affected customers by 2:00 p.m. on Monday. PG&E assured residents that repair crews would remain on duty until power is completely reinstated.
While the fire caused extensive damage to the substation and made repairs complex, PG&E confirmed that no injuries were recorded among workers or members of the public. The company reiterated its commitment to restoring service safely and urged customers to remain cautious.
Initial outages were reported around 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, with the power grid stabilised by approximately 4:30 p.m., preventing further disruptions. Fire officials succeeded in containing the substation blaze by about 6:00 p.m., according to local reports.
The outage occurred during a particularly busy period in the city, as tourists and holiday shoppers filled major districts. The power loss led to widespread traffic congestion, with several traffic lights rendered nonfunctional across affected areas.
