The Federal Government of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has announced that the country is currently hosting more than 138,000 refugees across 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory. This humanitarian effort reflects the administration’s continued commitment to providing safety, dignity, and support for displaced persons affected by regional conflicts and natural disasters.

The announcement was made through the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, which is coordinating the nationwide shelter initiative. According to available data, thousands of Nigerians have been forced to flee their homes due to insurgency, banditry, communal clashes, environmental disasters such as flooding and drought, and even industrial accidents.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, disclosed that approximately 16,634 Nigerian refugees are currently in Chad, 118,409 are in Cameroon, and another 186,957 are in the Niger Republic. Many of these individuals are now receiving coordinated support from both the Nigerian government and international humanitarian partners.

In line with the Renewed Hope Agenda, President Tinubu’s administration is working to ensure that refugees are not only protected but also supported through comprehensive reintegration programmes. These include access to shelter, healthcare, food, education, and livelihood assistance. The government is also engaging with international agencies to facilitate voluntary repatriation and long-term resettlement for those willing to return home.

This development highlights Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to regional solidarity and humanitarian leadership. It also demonstrates that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, no Nigerian will be abandoned, and every displaced citizen will have a chance at rebuilding a dignified life.
