Nigeria’s electricity generation rose by 10.92% in the first quarter of 2025, a major improvement credited to the reforms initiated under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the nation’s total power generation increased from 9,289.95 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in Q4 2024 to 10,304.47 GWh in Q1 2025.

This progress was largely driven by improved performance across thermal and hydroelectric power stations. Nineteen power plants, including sixteen thermal generators, recorded increased outputs. Hydropower stations such as Zungeru 1, Shiroro 1, and Kainji 1 also contributed significantly to the surge in capacity. Additionally, average hourly supply jumped by 13.39%, rising from 4,207.41 megawatt-hours per hour (MWh/h) to 4,770.59 MWh/h.

These improvements reflect the early gains from the Electricity Act 2023, championed by President Tinubu, which empowers both federal and state actors to drive reforms in the power sector. For the first time in years, no national grid collapse was recorded during the quarter, signaling enhanced coordination and more efficient dispatching of electricity across the country.

While this progress is commendable, NERC emphasized that challenges persist, especially in the areas of gas supply, infrastructure reliability, and high operational costs. Sustaining and building on these gains will require continued investment and policy consistency to ensure every Nigerian enjoys access to stable and reliable electricity.
