President Tinubu Accepts INEC Chairman’s Departure, Confers National Honour on Yakubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the departure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission following the completion of his second term. Yakubu, first appointed in 2015 and reappointed in 2020, has led the commission for ten years, overseeing numerous elections.

In recognition of his service to Nigeria’s democracy, President Tinubu conferred on him the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON). The President also directed that Yakubu hand over to the most senior National Commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will act as INEC Chairman until a successor is appointed.

Professor Yakubu, in a letter dated October 3, 2025, thanked the President for the opportunity to serve, highlighting his commitment to free, fair, and credible elections. The transition ensures continuity and stability in the operations of INEC.
